August Wrap-Up

A look back at ForecastWatch blog posts and ClimateWatch newsletters over the last month.

Two New Jets to Join NOAA Fleet

NOAA recently announced that it will purchase another aircraft to help support its forecasts, research, and missions. The G550 fully modified aircraft will join the Hurricane Hunters, and fly right above hurricanes and tropical storms, collecting highly detailed information about the storms. The information will then be used to refine forecasts, looking at the track and intensity of hurricanes. More accurate forecasts can provide a longer lead time for municipalities and people to prepare for oncoming storms.

WindBorne Scales Its Weather Sensing Balloons and AI Modeling

WindBorne Systems is the world’s largest atmospheric sensing system, and is also the owner of the most accurate medium-range global forecast model in the world – WeatherMesh. With a new round of funding raising $15 million, WindBorne looks to scale its weather sensing balloons and AI modeling to mitigate the most imminently dangerous effects of climate change: extreme weather and weather uncertainty.

Subscribe to the ClimateWatch newsletter!

Earlier this year, our parent company Intellovations LLC launched a newsletter called ClimateWatch!

The goal is to bring you the week's most pressing climate issues, impacts, trends and forecasts, groundbreaking innovations, and actionable tips in our weekly newsletter dedicated to keeping you up-to-date on climate information. In the future, the plan is to include in-depth analyses from our experts in the newsletter.

Atlantic Niña Possible This Year

Scientists have been observing the Pacific Ocean change from El Niño’s warmer-than-average conditions a few months ago to cooler-than-average La Niña conditions by late summer or early fall. However, something similar may be taking shape in the Atlantic Ocean this summer. The North Atlantic has been extremely warm so far this year, but as of the beginning of June, the Atlantic has been 0.5-1.0 degrees Celsius colder than average for this time of year. If these cold conditions persist through the end of August, a phenomenon known as Atlantic Niña may be declared.

Global State of the Climate 2023 Review

The international annual review of the world’s climate is based on contributions from nearly 600 scientists in 60 countries, led by scientists from NOAA’s NCEI and published by the Bulletin of the AMS. They recently released their 34th annual State of Climate report for 2023, and it reveals many broken records for temperature, greenhouse gas emissions, ocean heat, sea level rise, ice extent, and more in 2023.
